In the second paragraph above, Pat Goad White states that there was "no sign of the house left."  I believe she was expecting the house to be somewhere near the burial grounds of Cary Cox, Sr., which it is not.  The Cox-Mathis house (as it is called by the Forest Rangers) does still stand (see map), but is perhaps a mile or so from the Cox-Griggs Burying Ground.

She mentions that Cary Cox, Jr. and wife Martha Rountree are buried in the Burying Ground, but we did not find headstones for these 2.  The tomb of Joseph "outside the family plot" did not have any inscription at the time of our visit, but there was clearly a tomb abutting up to the stone wall of the larger plot.  The graves she mentions of Nancy Griggs and Martha R. were there and readable, so we know she's talking about the same plot.  There were graves with small stones without legible markings within the large stone walled plot, so these must be those of Cary Cox., Jr., and wife.  Cary Cox, Sr.'s grave and headstone are in a separate walled enclosure, and supposedly an infant child and his wife are buried in this plot, but it seemed too small for this to us...there are no markers except that to Cary Cox., Sr.
