The Descendants of John
Andrew Turnbough (1740-1846)
|
|
This page is a brief outline of my
Turnbough/Turnbow/Turnbo heritage.
(The spelling differs a great deal among
researchers
and changes over generations, and indeed,
one theory is that during the Civil War, Unionists maintained the 'W' while
sececessionists dropped it...but this doesn't always bear out*)
* See
Andrew Jackson Turnbow, subject of Charles Turnbo's "Texas
Turnbo's" who kept the 'W', but yet was a Confederate soldier in the
17th Texas Infantry along with his nephews Hugh, John Wesley, Willis, and
Allen C. Casey.
(Book copyright of Charles
A. Turnbo)
It is more or less an outline of the
direct descendancy of John Andrew Turnbough
to Jane Turnbow (Turnbo) who was my 3rd great
grandmother
I also included Jane's siblings.
More detail is available via my
Compiled
GEDCOM Page,
and the descendancy of Jane Turnbo Casey
is available at my Main
Casey Website.

***Please
note that George Turnbow, b. 1766 was married a second
time to a Margaret Clarke, and had several children by that second marriage
(on my GEDCOM or Register
Report, but not listed here for brevity's sake.)
John Andrew Turnbough was born ca. 1740
in Alsace also known as Alsace-Lorraine, which is an area of Western Europe
which is now part of France, but over the centuries it has been alternately
part of Germany then France, et cetera. I am not familiar enough
with the history of the 18th century in Europe to know if Alsace was more
French or German in the time of John Andrew Turnbough's birth, but the
name Turnbough sounds distinctly more French than German to me.
He immigrated to the New World in the 18th
century, and probably participated in the Revolutionary War as a horseman.
Documents in my possession (copies) show that he was employed and compensated
by one of the armies (unclear if it was the British or American army) for
his duties, and was paid in "Pounds, Shillings, and Pence." ***Anyone
who has received SAR/DAR status through this Turnbough, who was PROBABLY
a patriot from South Carolina, please notify me!
John Andrew Turnbough was my 6th great
grandfather, and as is evident above, I descend from his great-granddaughter,
Jane Turnbow Casey (see photo of her gravestone below).

Jane Turnbow Casey, b.
Nov. 30, 1815 (caption on photo is in error) in Tennessee, and d. June
16, 1901, in Farmer, Young Co., Texas.
She married James Hill Casey
(1813-1901) in 1832 in Wayne Co., TN, and moved to Williamson Co., TX in
1851.
This photo, along with a
similar photo of James Hill Casey, her husband, was formerly located in
the rotunda of the courthouse of Williamson Co., TX in Georgetown, Texas
in a group of photos entitled "Pioneers of Williamson Co., TX". It
is now in the Williamson
County Historical Museum (WCHM) in Georgetown, Texas.

The Turnbo name is one of the
most extensively researched surnames in my lineage.

Book (online) about the Turnbo Family in Texas...a MUST READ! Please
note, that this book by Charles A. Turnbo is primarily an outline of the
descendants of Andrew Jackson Turnbow listed
above. He was a brother of Jane Turnbow, my ancestor.
